A merry Christmas to you!

Other appropriate seasonal greetings are also implied by the headline. 🙂

We enjoyed a lovely social evening on 3rd December, in the Dovetail Cafe.

A selection of pictures show us having (quite sedate) fun. There was a huge turnout of artworks, which garnered a very wide-ranging set of votes, and right up to the last few votes counted, it seemed like a tie was inevitable. But after the photofinish, the result went to Tom Winlow as the winner, with Nicola Williamson in second place and Nicky Gage in third.

Some of us of with more Grinch-like tendencies were exceedingly depressed by the idea of guest carol singers, but we were in for a pleasant surprise! The Show Off Choir performed a wonderful 25-minute set, of festive songs from shows, films, and a few of the more harmonious carols thrown in. We were pleased to donate £100 to their chosen charity (Maggie’s Cancer Care).

The refreshments team were superb, the MC (Bev) was brilliant, and the video maker was in his element making sure all went well.

And most people remembered to take their Flora postcard pictures home with them, although if you weren’t there, and would like your entry back, then Roy or one of the other committee members will be laden with them for the next several events: please ask for yours back when you see them.

Footnote: application forms for the spring Life Drawing sessions, and also for the New Year lunch went out last week. Please reply promptly 🙂

Happy New Year!

There’s a rumour it’s Christmas!

It does seem to start earlier each year… carols on the radio on the 25th November with the excuse ‘it’s only a month to go’!

But here we are in December, and our public painting seems to die down as we gird our loins for 2026. We still have a Drop-in session and a Sketching group meet-up though!

The main event is our Christmas Social event on Wednesday 3rd, starting from 7 am. till 9.30  at the Dovetail Cafe. As well as special guests, there is tea, coffee and refreshments. There was a rumour of mulled wine until someone realised that the Methodist Church preferred not to have alcohol on the premises. Well, we may still manage non-alcoholic mulled something, to keep our tootsies warm.

Don’t forget to bring your entry for the Christmas painting competition (with prizes). They don’t have to be framed, just strong enough to stand on an invisible-easel. Also if you haven’t seen the ‘flora’ postcards we did earlier in the year, they’ll be on display too. Details

The following Wednesday, 10 December is our Drop-In Session at the Community Large Hall. Despite the pressures of Christmas, this usually goes ahead anyway. A chance to finish those cards you’ve been trying to get done before the last post? Details

Talking of cards, if you have some to send to the SO53 postcode area (our own), check out Scout Post, online or at many shops and stores around Chandlers Ford including the Co-ops, the Spinney 53, and Waitrose I think. The local scouts deliver the cards and you pay I think 35p for each. Cheaper than Royal Mail! Money goes to their Brickfield rebuilding fund.

And finally, hopefully Monday 15th will still see the Sketching Group out and about. Then there’ll be ten more days for your Christmas preparations. I have my first Christmas dinner on the Tuesday this year 🙂 Watch out for the invitation to our New Year Lunch sometime soon (and don’t forget to sign up!).

A happy Christmas to you all and very best wishes for the New Year.

A Successful Christmas Social

by Bev Dunstan

Thirty-six members attended the members-only Christmas social event on Wednesday, 4 December to enjoy an evening of good company, tea & coffee and the festive nibbles so well organised and served by Joy, Tessa, Sue and Helen.

There was a lovely array of artwork covering all three themes of “Reflections”, “Rain or shine” or “Christmas“.  Each piece was numbered and all of the attendees chose their favourite 3 pieces.   Once the votes were counted it became apparent that we had a draw for second place! These numbers were put into the hat and drawn again for 2nd and 3rd places.

The winners were:

Angela in First place:

Tricia in Second place:

and Mike in third place:

Mayor’s Christmas Card

The Mayor of Eastleigh had also asked if the Chandlers Ford Art Group could provide some images for his official electronic Christmas card.

The following images were chosen by the Committee members and shared with the Mayor’s office:

Well done to everybody who brought an artwork along, and we hope everybody had a good time, and a happy Christmas!

Merry Christmas – yes it’s here again!

We wrap up the year with a Christmas Social at the Dovetail Cafe this Wednesday 4th December between 7.30 and 9.30. As with previous years, we invite seasonal paintings… see full details.

The Drop-in session will be going ahead as usual on 11th December at the Community Hall on Hursley Road. If you’re still working on your piece for the Christmas social… I’m sorry, you’ll have to keep it for next year!

You have until Sunday 8th to apply for places at the Life Drawing sessions for the next quarter, so make sure you find the email, or the link in a newsletter, if you still need to sign up.

And applications for places at our New Year Lunch in January are already closed.

Members who are also Hillier Gardens members may have spotted that our Spring Exhibition is there for the early May Bank Holiday. Full details next year!

So all that’s left for December is to remind you to have a very happy Christmas, or other seasonal celebration. Why not make a New Year’s Resolution that involves art in some way shape or form? I know I’m getting some lovely new drawing pencils for Christmas (because they’ve already been delivered), so my resolution is to use them!

And finally thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to bring us a fantastic programme during the year, but most of all, thank you for your interest (and hopefully participation). There’s no point doing it all without you!

December dawns!

December dawns pretty late in the morning, so I expect you’ve seen it happen. I was tempted to go out and take pictures to draw or paint later, but then I noticed the temperature!

Christmas Party/Social Wednesday 6th

Part of my aim was to produce something for our Christmas social. This starts at 7.30 on Wednesday evening, and takes place at the Dovetail Cafe. It’s for members only, so if you still haven’t joined and want to come, contact our membership secretary immediately!

It’s a fun evening of mince pies and other goodies, drinks and social chitchat.

As with last year, we have a friendly competition, with your artwork on one of the themes: Christmas, Rain & Reflections, or Snow. No need to frame or otherwise support it, as long as it will stand up on an invisi-easel.

From 8pm you will be invited to vote, using a slip of paper you will have been handed on arrival.

We will also be selling raffle tickets at £1 a ticket in aid of the Naomi House charity, so please bring some cash with you! The prize is a beautiful framed watercolour kindly donated by Phil Biggs.

Drop-in Session Wednesday 13th December

The only other event this month is our indefatigable drop-in art group on Wednesday morning at the Community Centre in Hursley Road.

Watch out for –

  • an invitation to our New Years Lunch
  • a questionnaire about HOS24

I hope you have a very enjoyable Christmas!

December delight!

by Gill Brophy

We had fifty-five members arrive for the Festivities on Thursday night, with very nearly that number of entries for our competition with the theme of ‘Snow’, ‘Winter’ or ‘Christmas’. The Church and adjoining rooms had been beautifully decorated by Church staff, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, including several new members who braved the cold evening to come and join in the fun.

Animated conversation, coffee and mince pies were the order of the evening, with lots of decision making to ensure three votes were placed for their favourite paintings. Thanks are sincerely due to the wonderful ladies who manned the coffee and tea hatch for the evening – very much appreciated. The corridor looked wonderful with so many bright and beautiful works of art adorning both sides.

Janet and Bev nobly stepped in to do the ‘counting’, and eventually decisions were reached … the winners were Christine Marlow, Gill Evatt and Barbara Unsworth. The applause was long and loud!  Well done to everyone who submitted a painting.

The committee wish all members a very splendid Christmas and Happy New Year.
