Jill Iliffe – 11 July

Gouache Workshop

Saturday 11 July 2026 0930 – 1530

Venue – Church Hall adjacent to the Dovetail Cafe

Jill lived and worked in South London for most of her life and now lives and works in Hampshire. Jill studied at Wimbledon School of Art, achieving a BA in Fine Art and an award by the Roostein Hopkins Foundation for excellence in drawing, which funded her subsequent MA in Drawing in 2009. At the same time she was working in education for adults and young people and she retains an absolute passion for education being used as a tool to change and improve lives.

What is Gouache?

The internet defines Gouache thus:

  • Opacity: Gouache, with its higher pigment concentration, is typically opaque, allowing for solid, vibrant colors and crisp edges. Watercolor, on the other hand, is translucent, enabling artists to create subtle washes, gradients, and layered effects.

For the workshop Jill will start with demonstrations of how to paint with gouache and its differences to other mediums.

Participants will then experiment with the techniques and Jill will be on hand to give help and advice.

Once familiar with the medium, the final image will be created using your own reference information or using photographs as source images from Jill.

The use of vibrant Gouache can be found throughout Art History, from 18th C to classic style travel posters – here are some examples showing the versatility of Gouache:
