Remember, remember the 8th of November

Yes, forget Guy Fawkes, November is all about our Autumn Exhibition.

This flyer is available for you to download and print if you want to hand it to your friends, or to post on your social media, or send by email to friends, whatever ways you can think of to get people you know along to our exhibition on Saturday and Sunday 8/9 November, 10 – 4 at the Dovetail Centre Large Hall. And don’t forget the Dovetail cafe is open on Saturday morning, too.

If you’ve entered an artwork, make sure to submit it in line with the instructions on Friday afternoon/evening (it’s dark now!), and collect it again (if it doesn’t sell) on Sunday afternoon from 4.15.

What else is in store for November?

Life drawing happened on Sunday 2nd, and will happen again on Sunday 16th. You have to be booked in for this.  Details

The Drop-In Session takes place on Wednesday 12th at the Community Large Hall on Hursley Road. If you’re free, take advantage of this FREE dedicated workspace and get your project done or progressed. If you’re making something for a Christmas display or gift (or our social – see below), you’ve not long to finish it! – Details

Monday 17th sees another attempt by our Sketching Group to get out and about in the neighbourhood. The weather has not been kind for the last two months, but Storm Melissa should have passed, so maybe we’ll have a few settled days by then.

Wednesday 26th sees our last Zoom Demo of the calendar year (the art group year runs to the end of March) Elizabeth Hammond will be doing something about the Life of Plants. Details here, and the zoom link will be emailed to members a few days beforehand.

Christine Marlow Christmas Tree

Don’t forget that we have our Christmas Social evening on Wednesday 3rd December. It’s Christmas, it’s social, there’ll be nibbles and drinks, and also, bring your artwork on the themes “Winter Light”, “Frost and Flame” or “A Touch of Sparkle” (your choice). You could win a prize! Details

And finally, our first Basic Art Course will conclude on 29th November. I’d very much like to report on it if somebody (or more than one person) would like to send me some thoughts on it, what they gained, and whether we should do another. With photos, if possible. Email to cfagweb[at]gmail.com

Autumn Exhibition surpasses expectations

The Autumn Exhibition never gets quite as much attention as our summer one, but this year saw not only excellence in the exhibits, but a very healthy visitor footfall, especially on Saturday. Even better, we sold a good number of artworks across all categories on both days.

As always, the artists in residence each day added much interest, and probably brings the whole event to life. Thank you to all those who gave up their time, marshalling and setting up/taking down, as well as centre stage!

A taste of the exhibition on Saturday afternoon…

November, season of art and sketching!

The clocks may have gone back to sensible daytime hours (yes, I know you prefer light evenings) but it isn’t stopping our art.

Autumn Exhibition

Sat/Sun 9/10 November 2024 – Church Hall

Yes, it is far too late to enter now, but your help is still needed for stewarding, and most importantly getting everyone you know along to have a look. There will be artists doing their thing if you think the kids might be too bored just looking at things stuck on walls.

Other Activities

Wed 13 Nov 2024 – Drop-In Session – Community Large Hall – Details

Members are always welcome to drop in and get on with your own activities if you’d like company, or a warmer room than your own (not guaranteed). Bring your own equipment, and a mug, and something to protect the floor and furniture from paint splashes (and £5 towards to cost of the hall).

Sun 17 Nov 2024 – Life Drawing –  Church Hall 2-4pm Details

Let’s hope the heating holds up in the Church Hall for a new winter season of life models posing for our confoundment. Getting perspective right can be a challenge, and if you find a pose too difficult, you can move, or sit it out, but why not just give it a go?

Mon 18 November 2024 – Sketching Group

I’m really pleased the Sketching Group is keeping going while the weather holds. Yes, there have been one or two Mondays rained off, but on at least one occasion, they made an impromptu decision to postpone it to the Tuesday instead. Contact Lisa Marshall (details on the newsletters)

Wed 27 Nov 2024 – Zoom Demo – Les Darlow – winter landscapes in soft pastels over watercolour  – Details

This promises to be another excellent demonstration, with a tutor we have enjoyed in the past.

Zoom details will be sent to members a few days beforehand. If you haven’t used your Zoom since the spring, you will probably have to download a new version (that’s my excuse for being late to the last one. It took twenty minutes to load and process itself, even with the new ‘faster’ wifi connection.)

Workshops for 2025

Bev has circulated the sign-up form for our workshops in the first quarter of 2025. Please get yours in by 27th November if you want to participate in any of them. For a quick reminder of the menu, see the Workshops page here.

Autumn is upon us

September whizzed by in a whirl of excitement, plus whirling weather and a mini-Indian summer followed by rain. If you were trying to get any outdoor sketching done, you were lucky if you didn’t get wet!

October is more sedate, except that preparations are in hand for our Autumn exhibition at the Dovetail Centre Large Hall, over the Remembrance weekend. You need to get your entries entered (if you are a member you have been sent details), and your artwork ready to hand in!

And we finish the month with our first Zoom demonstration of the winter season. They all look particularly interesting, and ‘painting along’ is optional, but encouraged! You could always sketch, of course 🙂

October activities

Wednesday 9 Oct – Drop-In Session – Community Large Hall – Details

Saturday 12th October – Helen Talbot – Flour Paste art – details

Sunday 20 Oct – Life Drawing –  Church Hall 2-4pm Details

Monday 21st Oct – Sketching Group (details as per email)

Wednesday 23 Oct– Zoom Demo – Graham Webber ROI – East Anglia landscape in oils – Details

I was impressed with the artwork Graham Webber displays on his website – he has the North Norfolk coast light exactly right! Do check it out. Graham Webber

November News

I hope by now you have put your clocks back onto winter time (GMT). Check your car’s one, too!

Drop-in session

As November starts on a Wednesday, the second Wednesday is next week!

As usual the drop-in session will be at the Community Centre Large Hall on Hursley Road. Check this page for details.

Autumn Exhibition Sat/Sun 11/12 November

Our Autumn Exhibition will be at the Dovetail Centre (Church Hall), open to the public from 10 till 4 on both days. You should have received all the details about handing-in etc, and collection afterwards. If you are able to volunteer as a steward, even for an hour or so over the weekend, please contact Roy.

The success of the exhibitions relies on people telling their friends, neighbours, and even casual acquaintances about it, so don’t be shy, spread the word.

Wednesday 22nd – Zoom talk/demonstration

Our next Zoom evening is with Peter Keegan on “The Power of Composition & Design”. Details are here, and you will be sent the joining link by email about a week beforehand.

A number of members had difficulty viewing the separate Zoom screen that the speaker was using for the painting last time. I hope to get some basic hints added to the Demonstrations page before this next session.

Life Drawing Sunday 26th

Our last life drawing session for this calendar year takes place on Sunday 26th in the Church Hall. There are a few places left at present. Contact Roy or Peter Maule to book yourself in.

Advance notice

Don’t forget to put the Christmas social event in your calendar: Wednesday 6th December in the Dovetail Cafe from 7.30 pm

After the success of the New Year’s Lunch last January, details are being finalised for one this coming January. Watch your newsletters for details!
