Capturing light in radiant watercolours with Catherine Beale SWA

Catherine is a painter specialising in light-filled watercolours. She enjoys dramatically lit portraits as well as landscapes full of the British weather. She exploits watercolours mobility to the full with her own ‘gravity painting’ techniques which she shares across the UK in workshops, articles for The Artist Magazine and her 2023 book ‘Capturing light’.

Her painting practice began in 1996 in Singapore with a solo exhibition at the British High Commission and commissions from the US Embassy and the British Club. In 2006 she set-up a studio/gallery in Bath, Somerset and was selected for the Holburne Portrait Prize in the city. She is a member of the Society of Women Artists and her work has been exhibited by both the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.

Summary of the demo for the evening:

Watch Catherine create an atmospheric landscape step by step in wet-in-wet watercolour, mixing running pigment on a tilted, rigid artboard and developing sharp detail in solid tubed paint.
